2025 Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid adopts new naming convention
SHARE

For the 2025 model year, the Toyota Prius Prime retains its title as a fuel-efficient hatchback with no significant changes to its core design.

Toyota is discontinuing the dedicated plug-in hybrid variants of its Prius and RAV4 models, opting instead to make the powertrains interchangeable with other manufacturers’ plug-in hybrids. To simplify the process of identifying plug-in hybrids, the company adopts a consistent naming convention similar to that used by other manufacturers.

2025 Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid

Despite lacking a major redesign, the 2025 Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid still embodies the spirit of the Prime badge, introduced in 2016 with the 2017 Toyota Prius Prime, by surpassing other plug-in hybrids in most, if not all, key performance metrics.

Despite carrying over specifications implying a Prius Plug-In Hybrid, it still manages to extract an impressive 139 lb-ft of torque from its 2.0-liter inline-four engine and hybrid setup. While all-wheel drive is not available as a standard feature in the typical Prius hybrid, Toyota boasts an impressive 0-60mph acceleration of just 6.6 seconds for this particular model.

2025 Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid

The Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid offers up to 11 miles of electric-only driving range in its base SE trim, while the higher-end XSE and XSE Premium models are capable of an estimated 39 miles. The SE fashions achieve an impressive 51 miles per gallon when operating in hybrid mode, while the XSE and XSE Premium trims deliver a still-respectable 47 miles per gallon combined. While typically falling below the combined ratings of 49 mpg and 57 mpg, our findings indicate that the electric range and powerful motors enable all-electric driving to become the standard norm.

Pricing information for the Prius Plug-In Hybrid is expected to be announced closer to its arrival at dealerships. So far, Toyota has closely followed a sales pattern aligned with the standards set by the California Air Resources Board (CARB), prioritizing sales in California and other CARB-regulated states. With that technique, plug-in hybrid sales accounted for 21% of all U.S. What were the Prius’s gross sales figures for the 2023 model year?
