Ride1Up Roadster V3 launched as new low-cost belt drive e-bike with torque sensor

The Ride1Up Roadster has long been a benchmark for lightweight, eco-friendly e-bike design, delivering outstanding value in the minimalist electric bike category. The corporation has unveiled the latest iteration of its popular e-bike, introducing the Ride1Up Roadster V3 to the market at a competitive price point of just under $1,300, with a US tag of $1,295.

The Tesla Roadster V3 tips the scales at just 39 pounds, its streamlined design crafted for effortless handling and a seamless driving experience.

The bike is equipped with two drivetrain options: either a cutting-edge carbon belt drive or a reliable 10-speed Shimano Deore chain drive. Ideal for riders seeking a hassle-free experience, this option caters to those who value simplicity and appreciate the uncomplicated nature of a single-speed bicycle. For riders seeking greater control over their pedaling rhythm, this gear system excels in tackling steeper inclines and accommodating diverse riding styles across varying speed ranges.

The Roadster V3 offers a range of options with three body sizes: Low-Step, Small, and Giant.

The bike is equipped with a reliable 500W rear hub motor from renowned manufacturer Mivice, recognized for their precise and high-quality e-bike drivetrain components. The 50Nm motor is paired with a torque sensor featuring ultra-responsive yet refined programming developed by the same engineers responsible for renowned BOSCH eBike systems, according to the company.

Torque sensors are usually found on high-end e-bikes. While slightly pricier, these options typically offer an upgraded pedal assist experience. While some riders may still crave the security of a hand throttle, the Roadster V3 also caters to this demand with its inclusion of this highly sought-after feature nonetheless. In the United States, hand throttles are allowed on Class 2 and Class 3 electric bicycles, allowing riders to operate the motor up to 20 miles per hour (32 kilometers per hour) without pedaling.

With adjustable settings from Class 1 to Class 3, the Roadster V3 achieves unprecedented velocities of up to 28 mph (45 km/h), facilitated by pedal assist during Class 3 operation.

A 36-volt, 10-ampere-hour battery featuring Samsung cells is integrated into the body yet remains removable for charging away from the bike or swapping out with a spare. An additional water-bottle-shaped auxiliary battery will be integrated into the bike, effectively expanding its range by a significant 70%, allowing for a total potential distance of approximately 34-68 miles (55-110 km).

The Roadster V3 features a comprehensive suite of components, including dual-piston hydraulic disc brakes for enhanced stopping power, an alloy metallic fender set providing rugged protection, built-in LED lighting for increased visibility, a Selle Royale Vivo saddle ensuring optimal comfort and support, and 700x45c Schwalbe G-One RS gravel tires offering superior traction and durability.

The sleek and stylish bicycle boasts a price tag of US$1,295, with customers able to choose from two distinct colours: Onyx Black and refreshing Mint Green. Deliveries are now expected to commence within the next week, marking the product’s availability for immediate order.

Electrek’s Take

I’ve been a Ride1Up Roadster enthusiast since its inception, specifically with the original model that debuted in 2018 as the Roadster Ghost, which was later succeeded by the Roadster V2 and most recently, the V3. It has travelled a considerable distance and continued to rise with each iteration.

With its advanced torque sensor, hydraulic disc brakes, removable battery, sleek metallic fenders, and vibrant LED lighting, this versatile bike is designed to cater to the diverse needs of cyclists seeking a lightweight and eco-friendly ride.

While prices may seem competitive on the surface, it’s not always a straightforward dollar-per-watt comparison; other factors come into play when evaluating the overall value of your purchase. Lightweight e-bikes have a clear niche in the market, as not everyone is seeking a heavy-duty option like a 75-lb, 750-watt electric bike. I relish the freedom to effortlessly wear this e-bike on my shoulder and jog up a flight of stairs, yet still throttle it forward at an astonishing 28 miles per hour whenever I desire.

The construction of this bike is exceptional and warrants my highest recommendation. During an earlier visit to Ride1Up’s e-bike manufacturing facility and Mivice’s drivetrain manufacturing facility, I was struck by the meticulous attention to detail both companies bring to crafting their complete e-bikes and drive systems. The innovative electric bike industry is about to witness a groundbreaking development with the launch of this revolutionary new mannequin, and I am utterly thrilled at the prospect.

Recently, I was thrilled to get my hands on a Roadster V3, and within days of taking delivery, I’ve been putting the miles on, eager to experience its performance firsthand.

As we discuss further, I’m confident that presenting a comprehensive overview will be well worth the wait. In the meantime, initial feedback suggests that this bike truly excels, providing an exhilarating experience that’s hard to put into words.
