The iconic Volkswagen Firestone concept, now entering its electric era. Volkswagen’s latest creation, the ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE, pays homage to the iconic Golf Fireplace and ICE, reimagining its 1990s design essence in a modern context.

“With the ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE, we’re elevating the emotional intensity of our sporty flagship model,” said Andreas Mindt, Volkswagen’s head of design.

Volkswagen unveiled a unique, limited-edition concept car at its ID.4 Assembly event in Zurich, Switzerland, on Friday. Developed in collaboration with Munich-based fashion house Bogner, the sporty electric hatch is a modern reimagining of the iconic FIRE+ICE Golf model from the early 1990s.

The Golf R models, specifically the GTI trim, attained a cult-like following, mirroring Volkswagen’s success. Despite initially planning to sell 10,000 units, the company ended up selling a total of 16,700.

The all-electric Golf combines the innovative FIRE+ICE efficiency concept with the sporty essence of the ID.3 GTX, according to Tom Becker, Director at BOGNER FIRE+ICE, who elaborated on this groundbreaking fusion. Becker noted that a crucial aspect was combining numerous bespoke components and machinery within the vehicle itself.

Volkswagen introduces the ID.3 GTX, where performance meets electrification: a fusion of fire and ice in the electric age.

With its striking three-layer paintwork and subtle glass bead finish, the brand new ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE undoubtedly makes a bold statement.

To commemorate the iconic Golf Mk2’s distinctive darkish violet pearl-effect finish, the Electric Violet pearl shade was selected as a nod to this beloved model’s aesthetic heritage. Under specific conditions, the sky can transform from a deep blue to a range of colors including purple and even near-black, dependent on the intensity of the lightning.

Volkswagen has introduced a distinctive feature to its latest model, adorning it with 21-inch rims and a nostalgic nod to its heritage through the iconic FIRE+ICE badge, proudly displayed on both the B-pillar and roof spoiler.

The interior has also been elevated by an innovative cut-up shading concept. Volkswagen added a bold flaming purple accent to the driver’s side seats and stitching, while the passenger seats and interior feature icy blue design elements.

Throughout the vehicle, subtle nods to FIRE+ICE can be found, including the distinctive logos emblazoned on the accelerator and brake pedals. Additionally, it features a palette of colors, luxurious fabrics, and carefully curated components from Bogner’s esteemed collection. For those venturing to unfasten the vintage B-zippers, a nostalgic discovery awaits – a distinct fabric straight from the iconic decade of the 1990s.

Volkswagen’s innovative FIRE+ICE mannequin leverages the potent electric motor from the ID.3 GTX Efficiency model, harnessing its remarkable power and efficiency capabilities. With an impressive output of 321 horsepower, the Efficiency EV accelerates from a standstill to 62 mph (0 to 100 km/h) in just 5.7 seconds. The 79-kWh battery provides an impressive estimated range of up to 373 miles (601 km) on a single charge, according to WLTP estimates.
