BMW and Jaguar Land Rover are announcing a partnership focused on developing electric vehicles, with plans to collaborate on the creation of next-generation electric powertrains.

Two major automobile manufacturers jointly announced their plans during a simultaneous press conference.

The BMW Group and Jaguar Land Rover have jointly confirmed their commitment to developing next-generation electric drive units, a move that will accelerate the development of electrification technologies crucial for transitioning to a sustainable mobility ecosystem.

Klaus Fröhlich, BMW’s Board member responsible for improving administration, offered his perspective.

“The automotive industry is currently undergoing a profound transformation.” Collaboration is crucial to achieving success, particularly in the realm of electrification where collective efforts drive innovation and progress. As we partnered with Jaguar Land Rover, we found a like-minded ally whose strategic objectives for the future of electric drive components closely aligned with our own. “By streamlining our process, we’ll be able to better meet customer needs by accelerating innovation and bringing cutting-edge vehicles and technologies to market at a faster pace?”

The partnership’s practical application is comprised of a shared workforce, comprising BMW Group and Jaguar Land Rover consultants based in Munich, which can be tasked with developing Gen 5 energy components, with the production of electric drivetrains handled separately by each partner within their respective manufacturing facilities.

Electrek’s Take

This marks a significant step forward in electric vehicle improvement partnerships for traditional automotive companies.

Automotive giants like General Motors, Honda, Ford, and Volkswagen have announced joint efforts to develop and refine electric vehicle technology.

Their eagerness to collaborate with adversaries on this initiative is truly captivating.

While most bulletins are often under the radar, this instance appears to be an exception, with Jaguar seemingly embracing BMW’s pioneering fifth-generation electric powertrain technology.

In the final 12 months, our team had the opportunity to visit the BMW factory in Munich, where engineers are currently developing the company’s fifth-generation electric powertrain technology. The BMW iX3 electric SUV will debut next year.

Their electrical drive components have particularly caught our attention, boasting impressive power density within a remarkably compact design. Can Jaguar truly claim to be at the forefront of innovation?

Hopefully, they will invest in scaling up production volumes, which could ultimately result in a greater availability of electric vehicles.
