For the first time, Volkswagen announced its plan to launch production of its most affordable ID.1 electric vehicle, starting at 20,000 euros (£18,300 or $21,700) in 2027. Volkswagen’s forthcoming ID.1, priced at a modest $20,000, is poised to deliver “affordable electric mobility for all,” according to Thomas Schafer, the company’s model chief, who made the announcement on Thursday.

Volkswagen plans to begin production of its budget-friendly ID.1 electric vehicle for around $20,000 in 2027?

At Volkswagen’s annual press conference on Thursday, Shafer confirmed that the working title is ID.1, with a deliberate focus on releasing the automobile in 2027.

The ID.1 project is progressing well, with significant momentum already gained. While Shafer acknowledged that the automotive’s appearance is a given, the primary challenge lies in determining where to build it.

“That’s an exceptionally challenging economic scenario,” Shafer explained. As a result of declining battery prices, Volkswagen is able to launch a €20,000 electric vehicle (EV) for the masses through high-volume production.

When responding to concerns, four strategies are considered. According to Shafer, Volkswagen is expected to decide imminently on the production location for its affordable ID.1 model, reportedly priced around $20,000. Volkswagen may engage in discussions with Renault regarding the development of a compact, budget-friendly electric vehicle for the masses.

Volkswagen’s commitment to electrifying sports cars has been reaffirmed, with a total of 11 new models set to debut by 2027. While the ID.1 might be considered one of them.

The ID.2 will be observed, having been unveiled in its final form last March in concept guise. The ID.2all concept’s key selling point is its unique blend of a spacious, Golf-like interior and an affordable price tag comparable to the compact Polo model, aligning closely with Volkswagen’s overall strategy.

Shafer asserts that the EV concept embodies “the direction we aim to take the model,” founded on a novel entry-level variant of its MEB platform. The concept boasts a range of 279 miles, commencing at a price point of under $27,000 or approximately €25,000. The highly anticipated project is scheduled to debut in 2026.

In December, Stepan Rehak, Volkswagen’s chief designer and spokesperson for design, shared the initial teaser of the ID. The all-new 2All SUV: a comprehensive upgrade to the successful range of inexpensive electric vehicles.

Volkswagen has revealed plans to introduce a larger electric sport utility vehicle (SUV) in the US market. The model anticipates a strong start in North America, as the ID.7 and ID.Buzz are slated for rollout later this year. Volkswagen has introduced an updated ID.4, boasting enhanced range and capabilities, as detailed in our comprehensive review.

Electrek’s Take

Volkswagen is among several major automakers seeking to launch more affordable electric vehicles (EVs). The Rivian R1T, a US electric vehicle startup’s official debut, starts at $69,000. Starting at roughly half the price of its current R1S and R1T models, Rivian’s CEO, RJ Scaringe, also unveiled the R1T, a compact and more affordable electric vehicle (EV).

Automakers including Ford, Tesla, Hyundai, Kia, and General Motors are gearing up to release a slew of affordably priced electric vehicles (EVs) in an effort to expand the market’s reach into previously untapped demographics.

Despite misleading media claims that “EV euphoria is futile,” electric vehicle adoption continues its upward trajectory, poised for accelerated growth in the coming years. Manufacturers may prioritize offering affordable, frequently updated electric vehicles (EVs) to win over consumers hesitant to switch to electric power.
