General Motors has recently launched a groundbreaking innovation in electric vehicle technology: vehicle-to-home (V2H) bidirectional EV chargers, revolutionizing the way we power our homes with the energy stored in our electric vehicles.
As soon as installed, GM Power’s home EV chargers enable customers to harness energy from compatible GM EVs and supply power to their homes in the event of increasing energy outages across the US.
Customers can purchase GM Power’s V2H package through current GM mobile app offerings. The initiative is launching first in five states: California, Florida, Michigan, New York, and Texas, with a goal of expanding its reach nationwide in the future.
At a price tag of $7,299, this bundle is certainly an investment. The total package includes the GM Power Powershift Charger priced at $1,699, as well as the GM Power V2H Enablement Equipment available for $5,600. Pricing and taxes will not be factored in, and rates may vary depending on the property’s current configuration and other factors. General Motors has formed a strategic partnership with Qmerit, a leading provider of electric vehicle charging solutions for residential and commercial properties.
While differing from Tesla’s Powerwall at $11,500 with solar setup, GM’s system obviates the need for separate battery storage installation.
The primary focus of GM’s electric vehicles (EVs) being compatible with the GM Powerhouse product suite is the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV First Edition RST, scheduled to be available to customers this summer.
The all-new Silverado will feature innovative V2H (Vehicle-to-Home) bidirectional charging technology. With its massive 200 kWh battery pack capable of delivering up to 10.2 kW of continuous power, this electric pickup can supply enough energy to fully power a typical household non-stop for an astonishing 21 consecutive days.
General Motors plans to integrate its V2H (Vehicle-to-Home) bi-directional charging technology into all its Ultium-powered electric vehicles by model year 2026.
The lineup is expected to include the 2024 Sierra EV Denali, 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV, 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV, and 2024 Cadillac LYRIQ.
Certain 2024 GM electric vehicles may necessitate a visit to a dealership or an over-the-air update to enable bidirectional charging capabilities.
