Spotted: Hongqi E009 Electric Sedan Prototype Captured During Testing

At the Beijing Auto Show earlier this year, Hongqi unveiled four brand-new concept cars. A range of these products was manufactured and presented in a ready-to-use form, along with the E009. Currently, the vehicle proudly bears the Hongqi New Power model badge, strongly suggesting that the sedan will be a novel addition to the lineup under this division of Hongqi. The automotive industry has recently seen a significant increase in prototype testing.

Notably, the sunshades on the spotted car exhibited distinct differences from those featured on the Beijing design concept, mirroring instead the aesthetic observed on the EH7 model, which boasted a sleeker, more angular profile with a sharp, dagger-like silhouette. While the camouflage makes it challenging to discern whether the lights continue downward like those on the EH7 model or terminate at the fender as seen in the concept car, a closer inspection is necessary to confirm the design choice. One notable feature of this specific car model is its unique comb-shaped LED daytime running lights. A subtle air inlet can be observed underneath the front bumper’s vented section.

While maintaining a familiar profile, the overall design bears a striking resemblance to the original E009 concept car. With a sleek, stealthy appearance, the vehicle boasts blacked-out multi-spoke wheels and discreetly concealed door handles. The sleek design features blackened-out door pillars for a sporty and sophisticated look. The rear of the vehicle retains the distinctive Y-shaped tail light clusters reminiscent of the concept, albeit with subtle refinements that soften its sharp edges; a ducktail design adds a sleek touch to the overall aesthetic. With a sleek diffuser adding a sporty flair beneath the fender’s edge.

The Hongqi EH7, with its specifications outlined elsewhere, leverages the FME platform; similarly, the upcoming E009 is expected to build upon this same foundation. Currently, there is limited knowledge about the size of an automobile. Despite this, the EH7 measures just shy of five meters in length, with dimensions of 4.98m, 1.92m, and 1.49m (L/W/H) and a wheelbase of 3m, making it likely safe to conclude that the new vehicle is indeed smaller.

What’s the next move for Hongqi E009 at the 2024 Beijing Auto Show? Will it retain its futuristic design or take a more conservative approach? The wait is over, and we’re about to find out what this sleek SUV has in store. With its aerodynamic body, high-tech features, and aggressive stance, the Hongqi E009 has already made waves in the automotive world. But will it continue to push boundaries at the 2024 Beijing Auto Show?

The previous reports on this new car model suggested that it could be equipped with a state-of-the-art M190-150kW silicon carbide inverter system, implying that the vehicle’s motor is capable of producing 150 kilowatts of power.

Hongqi, a flagship brand of China’s First Automobile Group Corporation (FAW), has the distinction of being the country’s longest-running and most iconic automobile model. As a favored choice among top-tier officials in China, this luxury sedan has experienced a remarkable revival in recent times thanks to its more consumer-focused design. Hongqi unveiled its highly anticipated New Power model at last year’s Shanghai Auto Show. Currently, only the EH7 model is available for purchase, with the EHS7 scheduled to follow shortly. According to Autohome, the production schedule for the E009 model is slated for release in October 2025, with no indication of an earlier market debut.

Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology faces another hurdle in China as its regulatory approval is delayed once more. The company had initially sought clearance from the Chinese authorities in 2020, but the process has been repeatedly stalled due to concerns over safety and testing protocols. Despite the setback, Tesla remains committed to expanding its autonomous driving capabilities in the world’s largest market, where demand for FSD technology is expected to surge in the coming years.
