The BMW R nineT’s uniqueness lay in its provision of a blank canvas for owners to unleash their creativity through extensive customization options. BMW boldly enables customization of the R nineT with a specially crafted wiring harness, a detachable bolt-on subframe that can be easily removed or installed, and plug-and-play lighting components, inspiring enthusiasts to personalize their motorcycles. With their proprietary bolt-on conversion components already in place, the excitement truly began when they partnered with specialized workshops to craft one-of-a-kind R nineT custom motorcycles that showcased the true potential of creative collaboration? As a result, the BMW R nineT proved to be an instant success, enjoying robust sales figures over the past decade. Now that a decade has passed since its introduction?

To commemorate BMW Motorrad’s centennial milestone, the brand has introduced a significant update to the R nineT, marking the first major change since its initial release.

“For BMW Motorrad’s 90th anniversary, the R nineT and its customizing concept founded the Heritage expertise, solidifying it as a vital component of our model range,” says Dr Markus Schramm, Head of BMW Motorrad. “The latest R 1290 RT builds upon the rich legacy of BMW’s iconic boxer engines, boasting a more classic, lowered aesthetic while offering unparalleled customization options and cutting-edge innovations.”

According to Dr. Schramm, the revamped mannequin transcends mere cosmetic enhancements, boasting a profound transformation that goes beyond its rebranded identity and superficial add-ons. Indeed, the latest makeover of the nineT platform signals a significant transformation that is bound to generate considerable enthusiasm among loyal fans of this distinctive motorcycle. While details on the German manufacturer’s latest model are scarce, a few key specifications have been revealed.

BMW R 12 nineT styling

The purist design aesthetic is characterised by a clean and unbroken tank-seat-rear line, reminiscent of iconic models from the 1970s such as the /5 or the legendary R 90 S. Initially, the tank appears to be a classic BMW boxer-style tank, featuring a characteristic curve along its lower edge and conventional knee contacts. According to Edgar Heinrich, Head of Design at BMW Motorrad, the brand-new R 12 NineT boasts a unique feature – side covers situated within the body triangle’s area, reminiscent of BMW bikes from the 1970s in their genuine Roadster look.

While the new R 1259 nineT bears a striking similarity to its predecessor, the subtle design tweaks are crucial. BMW has adopted an even more angular design approach with its latest mannequin. As a result, the revamped bodywork gives off an unmistakably retro vibe that eclipses the classic sleekness of the original nineT. The gasoline tank bears a striking similarity to the 1980s R100 GS, mirroring the iconic design element by element, including the prominent display of BMW’s signature roundels in exactly the same location. The tail seems like a dull echo of a K75 caboose’s design, lacking any distinct character.

The bicycle in these press photographs has been readied for solo riding, equipped with a wasp-tail cowl and bum-cheek seat. While there are no standard passenger pegs, it appears that this setup leverages aftermarket components designed specifically for this model to meet customer needs. The BMW R 1250 GS is likely to be available with a two-up seat and pillion luggage setup. While the previous model’s silver brackets and front fender trim were sleek, the new facet covers Heinrich mentioned represent a notable upgrade in design, offering a more classic aesthetic while still exuding modern sophistication.

I wholeheartedly applaud the removal of the snorkel air intake on the right-hand side of the current R nineT, allowing for a more streamlined design and enhanced riding experience. This modification keeps the Boxer twin fully visible, not affecting the overall foul factor. The paint finishes appear almost inky black rather than a subtle grey hue on the R 12 nineT. BMW has deliberately leaned into the usage of silver accents to give its latest model a significantly more aggressive appearance.

BMW R 12 nineT efficiency

The BMW R12 nineT’s engine is equipped with the latest development of its iconic 1200cc oilhead boxer motor. The R12 naming convention plays a crucial role in this context, allowing them to draw upon various styles from their rich heritage lineup to create something unique. BMW has revamped the exhaust system on the R 1250GS, featuring improved performance in sharp turns and a crossover pipe design that, while aesthetically distinct, adds visual interest with its sleek, angular lines reminiscent of protective crash bars. The exhaust system features a conventional ‘catalytic converter’ situated beneath the bike’s belly, while a set of contemporary chrome-tipped mufflers complete the setup with a stylish flourish. The specifics on energy, torque, and fuel efficiency remain shrouded in mystery, with details yet to be revealed. While the current R nineT outputs 109hp, one might hope for a figure closer to the 136bhp of the R 1250 R; however, it’s likely that performance will remain relatively unchanged.

When configuring a vehicle’s suspension setup, it appears to follow a familiar pattern. We’re able to expect the latest, cutting-edge 2024 models of forks and Paralever technology. Whether a pure model of the R-12 with traditional forks and a lower price point will materialize remains to be disclosed. The Brembo brakes appear to be intimately connected, as such, they are linked via sturdy braided metal cables. BMW may introduce a revised chassis design in its forthcoming models. While the R12 body’s departure from its predecessors remains largely undisclosed, manufacturers have committed to releasing a comprehensive specifications list by mid-2023.

What’s your take on BMW’s flagship naked bike, the R 1250 GS?

As expected, BMW has also updated the standard equipment on the 2024 R1250GS. Starting with the lighting, anticipate a comprehensive kit featuring LED technology, comprising both the headlight and integrated tail light components. In the cockpit’s interior, a striking presence is made by the spherical analogue gauges, reminiscent of their vintage counterparts, yet belonging to the latest iteration of the pilot’s trusty sidekick, its twin mannequin. On the face of each dial, a liquid crystal display (LCD) provides riders with real-time information about their pace, current gear, trip data, available journey modes, and more. The sleek design of this vehicle is elevated by spoked 17-inch wheels, which may even become the standard fitment.

What a thrilling adventure awaits you as you customise your brand new BMW R 1250 GS? The possibilities are endless, from sleek black accents to vibrant colour schemes that make a statement.

“As with our heritage, we offer bespoke customization options as part of the distinctive BMW Motorrad design package,” says Edgar Heinrich. Like its modern counterpart, the mannequin, numerous possibilities exist alongside the release of this bicycle, showcasing a diverse array of features and components.

The R nineT’s versatility in customization, a factor that contributed significantly to its popularity, made it an attractive choice for many enthusiasts. BMW Motorrad has not overlooked this reality; consequently, the tradition persists with the R nineT. With its distinctive design, the R 12 features custom-wired harnesses that simplify tasks such as modifying turn signals without hassle. The bolt-on rear subframe, a testament to the vehicle’s modularity, can be effortlessly replaced with custom aftermarket alternatives, allowing for a complete redesign of the rear aesthetic.

If history repeats itself as it did in 2014 when BMW launched its motorcycle, we can expect exciting collaborations with custom shops. What an exciting aspect of our latest model debut! Let’s hope BMW delivers as expected.
