Formula E season 8 set to kickoff with new, ‘knockout’ qualifying format

The eighth season of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship is set to commence this weekend in Diriyah, Saudi Arabia, marking an electrifying start to the all-electric racing series. As always, the collection serves as a testing ground for innovations aimed at “enhancing the present,” and this season is no exception with the introduction of a novel, “knockout qualifying” format that promises to shake things up.

It’s expected that the innovative qualifying format will significantly elevate the Components E race weekend experience by allowing the top teams and drivers to demonstrate their speed and skill while battling for track position, thereby increasing the likelihood that a driver can pull off an exceptional lap and start from a strong grid position.

The innovative qualifying format divides the field of 22 cars into two groups of 11 drivers each, determined by their ranking in the Formula E Drivers’ World Championship.

In each segment, the 11 teams engage in an intense competition, generating 220 kilowatts as they strive to record the fastest lap times within a 10-minute time frame. The four fastest drivers from each group qualify for the “Duels” round, their times determining the next step in the competition.

In a thrilling display of martial prowess, the top eight Components E qualifiers face off in individual duels, each combatant seeking to emerge victorious and ultimately claim the title. The dominant driver claims the Julius Baer-sponsored Pole Position award, while their closest rival finishes a close second? The semi-finalists will be positioned third and fourth, while the quarter-finalists will take places five through eight, based on their fastest lap times.

The Components of Season 8’s Qualifying Format are as follows:

While I initially perceive it as an imposing figure, my frame of reference stems from the bygone era of IMSA’s early days when sports cars lined up one by one, completed their laps, and then called it a day. You bought what you bought. While the recent changes may seem overly complex, the head-to-head aspect of the revamped format, officially sanctioned just last Friday, should ultimately enhance its overall performance. To achieve ultimate fulfillment and satisfaction through harmonious coexistence with nature.

“The innovative qualifying format will pit teams and drivers against each other throughout the season, allowing for a thrilling head-to-head competition while still enabling any driver to seize pole position on their best day.” “For the benefit of our audience, the newly introduced qualifying format was engineered to offer a seamless, thrilling, and hard-to-predict experience.”

The Jaguar TCS Racing crew, just a hair’s breadth away from securing the Season 7 Group Championship, ultimately finishing with an impressive tally of 177 points against. Mercedes-EQ crew members recently issued a statement, announcing their readiness to kick off Season 8 of Formula E and expressing enthusiasm for the new qualifying format, suggesting it may favour their team’s prospects?

As we embark on our eighth season in the esteemed ABB FIA Formula E World Championship with Jaguar TCS Racing, there’s a palpable sense of excitement and anticipation. After an aggressive Season Seven, we’ve been working tirelessly as a team to position ourselves in a strong place this season, and we can’t wait to finally get racing in our Jaguar I-TYPE 5 and begin the battle for World Championship,” says Jaguar TCS Racing Team Principal James Barclay. “As our innovative qualifying system takes its first lap this weekend, we’re prepared to navigate any challenges that arise. But ultimately, we’re eager to get back behind the wheel and put on a show under the green flag.”

Electrek’s Take

As Season 8 marks the conclusion of Components E’s current era, featuring familiar cars and drivers, the subsequent season promises radical changes, introducing fresh talent and manufacturers, alongside expanded creative liberties for teams to innovate battery technology, potentially sparking an intense technological competition. Components E has consistently served up electrifying and competitive racing experiences, with Season 7 being a notable highlight; indications suggest that Season 8 will continue this upward trajectory.

Undoubtedly price watching.
