Reading: What’s the point of a limited-edition model when you’re already a standout in your segment? That’s the question we posed to ourselves as we spent some time behind the wheel of the 2024 Volvo XC60 Black Edition. The Swedish automaker has always been known for its commitment to safety and luxury, but this special edition takes things up a notch with its sleek black-on-black design. The exterior is where you’ll find most of the changes, as the XC60 Black Edition gets a matte black finish that’s both subtle and stylish. The grille, mirrors, and trim are all painted in this dark hue, giving the SUV a stealthy appearance that’s sure to turn heads. But it’s not just about looks – the Black Edition also gets some unique interior touches, like sport seats with contrasting stitching and a dash of carbon fiber trim. Under the hood, you’ll find the same potent 2.0-liter turbocharged engine that powers the regular XC60, churning out 250 horsepower and plenty of torque to get up and go. Of course, as a Volvo, safety is top priority – so you can rest assured knowing your Black Edition comes equipped with all the usual suspects: adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and more. But at $55,000, is this special edition worth the extra coin? Only if you’re looking to make a statement on the road, we say. Otherwise, there’s always the standard XC60 – which still packs plenty of punch. SKIP

Review: 2024 Volvo XC60 Black Edition

If luxury and versatility are top priorities in your search for a compact SUV, you’re spoiled for choice. The market teems with a diverse array of produce, ranging from common fruits and vegetables found at any local grocery store to rare and exotic varieties that may go unnoticed by those without a keen eye for quality and uniqueness. Luxury whispers to a few, while others loudly proclaim its presence. The Volvo XC60 belongs to this category. Volvo’s understated elegance is characterized by an air of quiet sophistication, born from a harmonious balance of restraint and simplicity. Throughout its stylish revival, the Swedish model’s enduring success is largely attributed to a significant influx of financial support from Geely and its partners, courtesy of a timely tidal wave of funding.

Introducing our new Black Version, set to debut in 2024 – a precise embodiment of its name, delivering exactly what it promises. Dark accents adorn both the exterior and interior, extending from the 21-inch wheels, grille, and emblems to the cabin’s seats and trim elements. The Onyx Black finish gives the XC60 an uncommonly sleek, all-black aesthetic, defying traditional Volvo design norms. While often praised for their understated yet elegant design, the reality is that these dark horses possess an undeniable allure that draws you in.

Notices indicate that Volvo will discontinue using the term “Recharge” to describe its plug-in hybrid and electric models, as new XC90 Recharge variants are set to arrive. The XC60 Plug-in Hybrid leverages the T8 AWD powertrain, comprising a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with an 8-speed automated transmission and a 143-hp electric motor, delivering a combined output of 455 horsepower and 523 lb-ft of torque. The XC60 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.8 swift seconds.

While its charger does not support quick charging, the battery can still be charged at home via standard Stage 1 and 2 chargers. Our on-road assessment revealed a Volvo-claimed electric range of 58 km, which we closely matched with a measured 55 km. While acceleration may be brisk, the true power output of 455 horsepower is misleadingly high, as this combined force is distributed across all four wheels through various modes of propulsion; however, not all that power reaches the road simultaneously. While the XC60 T8 might boast impressive acceleration figures on paper, it’s unlikely to deliver the same level of exhilaration as a performance-oriented SUV like the Macan Turbo or GLC 43 AMG. While it handles stiffly like its predecessors, this version struggles to absorb low- to mid-range impact shocks as adeptly. The physique rolls smoothly, revealing impressive amounts of definition as you coax out the muscles with rapid, flowing bends. Polestar’s latest offering isn’t a high-performance SUV, but rather a bespoke unit designed to cater to those seeking a unique driving experience.

At moderate speeds, the XC60 truly shines when the engine can wind down and let the electric motors take over, seamlessly merging to optimize efficiency. As you navigate the XC60’s terrain, a refined, airy quality permeates the cabin, underscoring its luxurious credentials – even without the telltale badges on the rear proclaiming its prestige. It wraps itself in the comforting folds of worn denim jackets, just as if they were navy ribbons.

Since its introduction in 2018, the second-generation XC60 has admirably maintained its appeal, with an interior design that has successfully weathered the test of time and remained relevant in an ever-evolving landscape. Even in this moment, it appears effortlessly modern and chic, its clean lines and sparse decor exuding a sense of understated sophistication. The thick leather-wrapped steering wheel yields to a satisfyingly plush texture beneath one’s grasp, its ergonomic design and subtle click of the chrome-encased buttons inviting a natural affinity. The centrally mounted touchscreen boasts an expansive, intuitive design, thanks to its seamless integration with Android’s user-friendly interface and robust Google-powered performance – simply utilize it as you would a Google Home device to effortlessly adjust various vehicle settings.

The centre console is precisely designed and sculpted to provide maximum storage space. A discreetly sliding cowl conceals your belongings, prompting caution against potential thieves attempting to gaze through the transparent material. The pièce de résistance is undoubtedly the Orrefors crystal gear selector, a refined homage to Sweden’s design heritage and a masterstroke of upmarket flair surpassing even the glass shifters found in the BMW iX.

While it’s tempting to overlook the Volvo in favor of its German competitors, one must acknowledge that they offer a substantial amount of added model prestige and performance at a price point that is commensurate with their reputation. While the XC60 excels in ergonomics and performance, its age shows in its exterior and interior design. As Volvo prepares the imminent release of its all-electric variants, the XC60 remains a reliable yet often overlooked option in the luxury SUV market.
