Minivans shift to hybrid, except Honda Odyssey
SHARE
  • The newly revamped Kia Carnival now offers a hybrid option, boasting a projected fuel economy of up to 36 miles per gallon.
  • As a hybrid offering, the Toyota Sienna achieves an impressive fuel economy of up to 36 miles per gallon on the highway and 35 miles per gallon when equipped with all-wheel drive.
  • The Chrysler Pacifica stands as the sole plug-in hybrid minivan available, boasting an impressive 32-mile electric range.

The diverse range of minivans available in the American market? remains relatively small, with the majority of the original group demonstrating a strong commitment to environmentally sustainable practices. While most minivans now offer hybrid or plug-in hybrid options, the exception is the 2025 Honda Odyssey, which sticks to its traditional powertrain.

2024 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid

  • Hybrid Powertrain Options: A plug-in hybrid featuring a 260-horsepower 3.6-liter V-6 engine, paired with a two-motor hybrid system and an 16-kilowatt-hour battery pack, with front-wheel drive capability.
  • MPG: Up to 32 miles all-electric range, with a combined rating of 82 MPGe. Hybrid mode offers an estimated 30 mpg mixed.

  • PHEV beginning worth: $52,750

Since its launch in 2017, the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid has remained the sole plug-in hybrid minivan on the market. While exceeding expectations, this plug-in hybrid efficiently accommodates daily routines by allowing households to utilize it as an all-electric vehicle for shorter urban excursions and a fuel-conscious hybrid for longer highway commutes. The Pacifica Hybrid still meets the strict criteria to qualify for the full $7,500 federal tax credit introduced in 2024.

  • The hybrid powertrain option combines a potent 242-hp 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a 54-kW electric motor and a 1.4 kWh battery pack, featuring front-wheel drive.

  • MPG: TBD
  • Hybrid beginning worth: $41,895

For the first time, Kia introduces its 2025 Kia Carnival Hybrid with a hybrid powertrain to its popular minivan lineup. The Hyundai Carnival has undergone a mid-cycle refresh, incorporating technological advancements and a revamped aesthetic, while its powertrain remains identical to that of the 2025 Kia Sorento Hybrid crossover, also receiving a facelift for the new model year. While EPA estimates for the Kia Carnival Hybrid are uncertain, it’s likely to approach the Sorento Hybrid’s combined rating of around 36 mpg.

Toyota Sienna

  • Hybrid Powertrain: High-performance combination of a 245-horsepower 2.5-litre inline-four engine and advanced two-motor hybrid system, paired with a robust 6.5Ah battery pack, available in both front-wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) configurations.
  • Fuel Economy: 36 mpg combined (front-wheel drive); 35 mpg combined (all-wheel drive)
  • Beginning worth: $39,080

The 2021 Siena received a standard hybrid powertrain as part of its latest design updates. Unlike the Pacifica Hybrid, it’s not a plug-in hybrid, but still offers the option of all-wheel drive, setting it apart from the recently released Kia Carnival Hybrid, which aims to match its impressive 36-mpg EPA combined rating.

Honda Odyssey

  • The fuel-efficient powertrain of this vehicle boasts a potent 280-horsepower 3.6-liter V-6 engine, paired with a smooth-shifting 10-speed automated transmission and intelligent front-wheel drive capabilities.
  • MPG: 22 mpg mixed
  • Beginning worth: $43,315

The 2025 Honda Odyssey undergoes a subtle styling revamp and adds new technology features, but its powertrain remains unchanged. That leaves the Odyssey, which underwent a final redesign for the 2018 model year, as the last minivan without an available hybrid powertrain. Honda is committed to achieving 50% hybrid sales and plans to offer hybrid variants of all its core models, so an Odyssey hybrid may eventually become part of its product lineup.
