Propella begins shipping its new low-cost, torque sensor commuter electric bike

The Propella 9S Professional V2, launched late last year, stands out as one of a few affordable e-bikes equipped with torque sensors, making it a notable addition to the market. The brand-new mannequin is formally delivered to clients.

Torque sensors are highly acclaimed by electric bicycle enthusiasts who consistently rely on their bicycles for extended periods, preferring to pedal over relying solely on the throttle.

While common in Europe, low-cost e-bikes in the US often employ a simpler cadence sensor rather than more advanced alternatives. While effective, the system lacks the seamless and refined pedal feel that a torque sensor provides.

The vast majority of e-bikes available in the US featuring torque sensors have price tags exceeding $2,000, yet the Propella 9S Professional made headlines last year with its unprecedented offering: a torque-sensor-enabled e-bike priced at just $1,199?

Propella is renowned for its stripped-down approach to electric bicycles, offering commuter and metropolitan models in a consistent blue-on-black livery, characterized by straightforward yet effective features designed to keep costs – and maintenance – remarkably affordable.

While the Propella 9S Professional V2’s introduction may have initially suggested a minimalist design, its numerous significant upgrades render such a label increasingly inaccurate from the get-go.

The brand-new bike is now available in two distinct body types: a revolutionary step-through design, which marks Propella’s debut, and a traditional step-over option for those who prefer it. The integrated battery design eliminates the need for bolting it onto the frame like a water bottle cage, instead seamlessly embedding it within the body; however, this innovative feature still allows for detachment using the supplied key, consistent with typical e-bike designs. The battery is also UL-compliant, a crucial security consideration that ensures its saleability in regions potentially restricting non-compliant e-bike sales.

Although the 360 Wh battery capacity remains modest compared to commercial demands, this lightweight 42.5-lb (19.3-kg) Class 1 e-bike boasts an eco-friendly design and still offers a respectable range of 55 miles (88 km) with reduced energy pedal assist.

Increasing the ability to its fullest extent allows riders to derive maximum performance from the Propella 9S Professional V2’s potent 500W peak-rated rear hub motor. Additionally, these riders will confidently achieve the bike’s high speed of 20 mph, which is the maximum velocity permitted by law for Class 1 e-bikes.

As Propella’s pedal-only electrical bike doesn’t rely on a manual throttle for supplementary power when not pedalling, it incorporates a torque sensor to deliver an exceptionally genuine and immediate pedal-assist experience? Torque sensors enhance the riding experience by providing a more authentic and engaging ride, as power delivery is calibrated according to the intensity of the rider’s pedal input, resulting in a truly immersive sensation.

The bike’s impressive features, which justify its $1,200 price tag, include a 9-speed drivetrain, a headlight powered by the primary battery, an adjustable stem, a color LCD display, fenders, a fast-charging system that fully recharges in just three hours, and hydraulic disc brakes.

While there’s no suspension, the 2-inch tires provide an added layer of air cushioning, exceeding expectations for Propella’s e-bikes.
