Criminals beware! The Chevrolet Blazer EV Police Pursuit Vehicle is now at the disposal of law enforcement, boasting impressive torque and acceleration capabilities.
We had the unique opportunity to experience more than just sitting behind the wheel of this electric vehicle (BEV) as part of a simulation, not only getting to drive it under regulation enforcement conditions but also joining forces with officers in a simulated high-speed chase. As anticipation builds for the passenger-oriented Chevy Blazer EV, the American auto giant has been dropping hints about a law enforcement-specific iteration in the making, engineered to cater specifically to police departments.
In summer 2022, we caught our first glimpse of the Chevy Blazer EV Police Pursuit Vehicle, marking a milestone moment for Chevrolet as it unveiled its inaugural pursuit-rated electric vehicle to date.
The bespoke battery-electric vehicle (BEV) was engineered around the premium Chevy Blazer EV SS trim, with specific modifications made to meet Michigan State Police standards for high-speed pursuit vehicles. By August 2023, Chevrolet unveiled a precision-crafted Blazer EV Police Pursuit Vehicle, featuring a police-certified speedometer, reinforced suspension, protective underbody skid plates, and rugged 20-inch metallic wheels.
Equipped with a robust 400-volt dual-motor all-wheel-drive system, the electric Blazer boasts an impressive output of up to 498 horsepower and 531 pound-feet of torque. When discussing the Ultium platform, Chevrolet clarified that General Motors’ technology enables a carefully balanced weight distribution and reduced centre of gravity for enhanced handling and agility during driving.
This week, we had the opportunity to test drive the Blazer EV Performance Package Vehicle (PPV), accompanied by a passenger in the rear seat for a brief spell before switching to shotgun for a thrilling ride along.
The Chevrolet Police Pursuit Vehicle (PPV) program has successfully integrated the Blazer EV into their fleet, resulting in a more environmentally friendly and cost-effective policing operation.
Recently, we embarked on a journey across the Detroit metropolitan area to test-drive the forthcoming Chevy Silverado RST and Equinox EV models. To accommodate these impressions, you’ll need to schedule appointments later this month; as an added incentive, Chevrolet surprised the press by taking a detour to visit a local police academy and get an up-close look at the Blazer EV Police Pursuit Vehicles in action.
At first glance and at close range, the PPVs appear razor-sharp and menacingly imposing. While high-speed chases may garner applause from onlookers, they pose significant risks to public safety when viewed from the perspective of those directly affected – namely, the individuals being pursued.
The police-certified all-electric Blazers appeared to be an ordinary police vehicle at first glance, equipped with radios, laptops, and “safety” features – don’t worry, the arms in our EVs were actually rubber. The uninviting chill of the backseat, a deliberate design feature intended to keep both rear passengers and law enforcement officials segregated for everyone’s safety.
Despite a relatively quiet update cycle, one notable decision stood out: the option to retain carbon fibre trim on the door sills remained available. Many suspected offenders would likely describe the experience as a welcoming one. The spacious trunk accommodates a wide range of police equipment, including riot gear, although I was not permitted to test its functionality.
During our outing, I was tasked with taking the Blazer EV for a spin around the police academy’s outdoor track, and I’m excited to share that experience with you in the accompanying footage. Following the experience, I climbed into the driver’s seat alongside an officer who guided me through the same route, but this time at significantly increased velocities to simulate a high-speed pursuit. It was a blast.
