The new Sorento PHEV’s styling and technology harmonize seamlessly with its conventional siblings, yet its affordable price tag has skyrocketed significantly since its inception three years ago.
Kia announced on Tuesday that the 2025 Sorento PHEV will feature a mandatory destination fee of $1,375. The SX Status model starts at a base price of $54,465 with destination. The SX Status was the sole trim level available for the 2024 model year, with a starting price of $51,655. Neither of these models are eligible for a federal electric vehicle tax credit.
The Kia Sorento PHEV launched in 2022 at a starting price of $46,165. The Tesla Model S was also qualified for an additional incentive, which relied on battery pack size, thereby reducing the effective price to $39,578 for tax credit-eligible customers.

While not all buyers were able to capitalize on the tax incentive during its availability, the Sorento PHEV currently costs $10,000 more than its sticker price due to the value hike for the 2025 model and the absence of the tax credit.
The 2025 Sorento PHEV adopts the same facelift as its hybrid counterpart, introduced on non-hybrid Sorento models in 2024, characterized by a more prominent grille.
The SX Status trim now boasts an expansive, curved panoramic display that seamlessly integrates a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 12.3-inch touchscreen, while the entry-level EX trim features a 12.3-inch touchscreen accompanied by a separate instrument cluster for streamlined driving information. Wi-Fi connectivity, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto come standard with each configuration, featuring advanced digital key performance on SX status models. Kia’s adaptive cruise control boasts a unique feature: its ability to learn and adapt to individual drivers’ habits, complemented by the brand’s advanced Freeway Driving Assist 2 technology.

The powertrain, featuring a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine mated to a six-speed automated manual transmission, a single electric motor, and a 13.8-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack, remains unchanged in its normal all-wheel-drive configuration. While retaining its existing output of 261 horsepower, Kia anticipates.
Consumers have limited options when it comes to choosing from a range of similar-sized plug-in hybrid crossovers. Although its Hyundai Santa Fe counterpart underwent significant updates for 2024, no official statement has been issued regarding the revival of the plug-in hybrid variant. The vehicle offers enhanced capabilities, albeit diminished effectiveness, boasting an EPA-estimated 26 miles of electric range and 23 mpg combined, following a plug-in charge.
