Europe meets Texas? The MOD Berlin electric bike seeks to find the best of both
SHARE

MOD Bikes, a pioneering electric bicycle manufacturer based in Austin, Texas, is thrilled to announce the arrival of its latest creation, the innovative MOD Berlin e-bike. Although marketed as a commuter-class electrical bike, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s incapable of competing at a higher level.

In the spirit of “everything’s bigger in Texas,” MOD’s entire range of electrical bicycles boasts an impressive array of high-performance features, including robust motors, accelerated speeds, and the innovative capacity to attach a secondary battery, effectively doubling one’s range.

Within the MOD Berlin’s case, a 750W hub motor powers the bike, allowing it to reach a maximum speed of 28 mph (45 km/h) with pedal assistance while adhering to Class 3 e-bike regulations by not exceeding the legally permissible speed limits.

The inclusion of five programmable pedals and a torque sensor enables responsive and intuitive pedaling up to 28mph, enticing many to utilize the pedal-powered aspect, while throttle riders can still reach speeds of up to 20mph (32km/h), complying with Class 2 e-bike regulations.

The lithium-ion battery pack boasts a substantial capacity of 615 watt-hours, with a nominal voltage of 48 volts and an impressive 12.8 ampere-hours, allowing for an estimated maximum range of approximately 45 miles when utilizing pedal assist technology. Riders can enjoy up to 90 miles (145 km) of range with the added flexibility to mount a second battery, significantly expanding their riding capabilities.

The electric bicycle features a sturdy aluminum frame, boasting a step-through design and robust 29-inch wheels, weighing in at approximately 58 pounds or 26 kilograms.

While Texas’s high-octane energy and rapid pace of life are undeniable, the oversized wheels and distinctly European geometry design seem to evoke a stronger connection to its Berlin counterpart than one might expect. At first glance, the bike may appear to be an unyielding contraption, but upon closer inspection, the fork’s stem cleverly conceals a significant 40mm of suspension travel.

The adjustable stem, rear rack, fenders, and integrated LED lighting system all contribute to the bike’s appeal as a practical commuter option, while the 7-speed Shimano drivetrain provides reliable gear shifting capabilities.

To enhance commuter safety, the bike’s flip indicators seamlessly integrate with the optional Lumos helmet, transmitting these indicator inputs wirelessly to the helmet’s integrated lights, providing exceptionally visible signals.

The integration of hydraulic disc brakes on 180mm rotors effectively rounds out the commuter package, providing low-maintenance stopping power that surpasses its cable-actuated mechanical disc brake counterparts in terms of reliability and efficiency.

Now available for pre-order, the Mod Berlin boasts a limited-time promotional price tag of $2,199, representing a significant $300 discount from its Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP).

The bike is available in both brushed aluminum and charcoal black finishes.

Earlier this year, we had the opportunity to visit Mod’s headquarters in Austin, where we got to try out many of their latest innovations, including a hands-on experience with their pioneering Lumos wireless helmet technology.

We also acquired a preview of MOD’s unique design for public e-bike charging stations, which the company is using to collaborate with partners on pilot projects.

Electrek’s Take

As my European sojourn prolongs, I dedicate additional hours to studying and becoming more enamored with the distinctive features of Dutch transportation, specifically the large-diameter wheels and the emphasis on electric bicycles designed for daily commutes. While this is no ordinary Dutch bike, it has acquired many features that contribute to making these styles so comfortable to ride. These mobility aids are effortless to install and remove, effortlessly traversing uneven terrain including bumps and cracks, while their substantial wheels ensure a smooth transfer of momentum.

You’re unlikely to dislodge my prized Class 3 e-bikes from my reluctant, numb hands. Having a comfortable, upright commuter e-bike that effortlessly reaches speeds of 28 mph and features a torque-sensing system offers an excellent blend of power and versatility.

After exploring numerous MOD’s fashion trends and spending several days at their headquarters, I can confidently attest to the authenticity of the bicycles in question. While valuing slightly higher than their direct-to-consumer fashion peers, the company successfully marries strong design with a welcoming bike-shop atmosphere, providing reassurance that your purchase is backed by a reputable, US-based entity.
