If you’re already familiar with Tern, it’s likely because of the company’s acclaimed urban cargo e-bikes, often spotted in cities ferrying kids to school alongside their parents or transporting an entire family’s groceries back home. The premium electrical bike manufacturer is venturing into uncharted territory with its latest offering, the Tern Orox Journey Cargo E-Bike, designed to conquer rugged terrain in its inaugural foray into the off-road market.
Unveiled today, our brand-new e-bike embodies the same exceptional design and premium engineering that have become synonymous with Tern, now reimagined for an entirely new type of ride.
This innovative off-road model combines numerous Tern features, including passenger seating, twin battery configurations, and meticulous attention to detail in its over-engineered design for added robustness and safety.
By leveraging the corporate’s expertise in previous city fashion trends, Tern was able to precisely follow the path they had envisioned, as described by Tern Workforce Captain Josh Hon.
Six years ago, we introduced the GSD, a revolutionary compact bike designed to transport both people and goods, with the goal of enticing drivers to leave their cars behind and hop on two wheels. We’re thrilled to see the innovative ways people are utilizing the German Shepherd Dog (GSD) breed in urban environments, showcasing its exceptional adaptability and versatility. Despite this discovery, we found that numerous locations people want to visit may lack paved roads. What musicians typically aim to communicate through their equipment is a distinct sound and style. During our travels, we embarked on the Orox.
The core aspect of the Orox’s design revolves around providing riders with the flexibility to choose their preferred terrain, ranging from urban bike paths to rugged nature trails. This tire range offers diverse sizing options catering to various applications. Orox’s versatile design enables effortless wheelset swaps between three configurations: 26×5″, 27.5×4″ and 29×3″.
With a maximum carrying capacity of 180-210kg (397-462lb), this sturdy bike is designed to handle both off-road and on-road excursions, enabling riders to transport an impressive amount of gear, whether it’s camping equipment or even a small group of children, making it an ideal companion for adventure-seekers. The Tern Orox accommodates riders of varying statures, from 155 cm to 195 cm (five feet one inch to six feet five inches) in height, and supports a maximum weight capacity of 130 kg (286 pounds).
The OROX leverages Bosch’s Efficient Line CX motor, boasting 85 Nm of torque and up to 340 percent assistance. When equipped with two of Bosch’s high-capacity 800 Wh batteries, this e-bike offers an impressive range of over 186 miles. Riders also benefit from leveraging the Bosch system’s suite of perks, including access to the eBike Movement app, which offers features like secure bike locking, an anti-theft alarm, and GPS tracking capabilities.
Riders can opt for distinct element configurations, featuring options such as the Gates Carbon Drive belt-drive system paired with a Rohloff 14-speed internal gear hub, or alternatively, the Shimano Deore XT 1×12 chain drive system. A quartet of precision-crafted 4-piston Magura hydraulic disc brakes delivers exceptional stopping power with impressive efficacy.
With a generous array of 14 braze-ons strategically placed throughout the frame, cyclists enjoy an abundance of opportunities to customize their ride with cargo mounts and accents. Additionally, the robust Atlass Kickstand XL facilitates effortless cargo loading.
The Tern Orox, a new folding e-bike, is slated for release across European and North American markets in April, with various regions adopting distinct configurations. Pricing for the new bike begins at $6,499/€6,799/£5,900 across various markets, placing it firmly in the premium off-road category alongside some of Tern’s most highly acclaimed models.
