Recently, SAIC-GM-Wuling debuted its Wuling Starlight S SUV in China, available in both pure electric and plug-in hybrid variants, built on the three-way partnership’s Tianyu D platform. The launch is slated for August of this year.
The Wuling Starlight S draws inspiration from the sleek and modern Star Wing Aesthetics design philosophy. The entrance features a sleek, minimalist design, resembling a stylized “7” shape. The rear features a distinctive design, complemented by 7-shaped LED taillights that mirror the shape of the headlights, creating a harmonious visual connection. Additionally, a prominent brake light atop the vehicle enhances its sporty appeal. Four distinct exterior paint options will be available for customers to choose from: Star White, a brilliant and radiant shade; Interstellar Blue, a deep and celestial hue; Star Grey, a sophisticated and neutral tone; and Star Gold, a warm and luxurious finish.
The aspect profile offers a range of conventional design elements, including blackened window frames, aspect skirts, wheel eyebrows, and roof baggage racks. With dimensions of 47.45 feet in length, 19.5 feet in width, and 13.4 feet in height, and a wheelbase of 9.2 feet?
The vehicle features a set of 235/55R18 tires for optimal performance and handling.
The plug-in hybrid version is driven by SGMW’s Lingxi powertrain, which combines a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated engine with an electric motor at the front, paired with lithium-iron phosphate battery packs. The maximum engine power is 78 kilowatts, equivalent to 105 horsepower. Two battery pack capacities are expected to be available: 9.5 kilowatt-hours (kWh) and 20.5 kWh, offering respective pure electric ranges of approximately 43 kilometers and 90 kilometers when tested under the Chinese Laboratory Test Cycle (CLTC).
The pure electric variant features a 150 kW (201 horsepower) entry-level electric motor, paired with a lithium-iron-phosphate battery pack; specifics remain undisclosed for now.
While sharing similarities with the Wuling Starlight, the cockpit’s overall architecture displays a distinct design philosophy. The vehicle features a 15.6-inch central management display screen driven by the Ling OS automotive operating system, a compact 8.8-inch full-featured LCD instrument cluster, and a sporty flat-bottomed dual-spoke multifunctional steering wheel. On the central console, there are two cell phone storage compartments and cup holders, as well as a limited number of ergonomic buttons remaining.
Throughout its interior, various configurations feature concealed compartments, including an eyeglass storage tray, additional storage beneath the central console, and a rear armrest equipped with cup holders.
Can a panoramic sunroof with an area of approximately 1.18 square meters currently be installed?
The seats feature a motive force seat with six-way electric adjustment and a co-pilot seat with four-way electric adjustment, as well as heating and ventilated functions for optimal comfort. The rear seats feature adjustable heating and a backrest that tilts up to 127 degrees for enhanced comfort and relaxation. The rear seats fold down to create a flat surface, resembling a large mattress.
The typical trunk capacity is 525 litres, yielding a further 85 litres of concealed storage space within the cupboard. When the rear row is folded down, the trunk capacity expands to an impressive 1768 liters.
