Bike Of The Day: 1974 Kawasaki KZ400 Cafe Racer
SHARE

The 1974 Kawasaki KZ400 Cafe Racer underwent a meticulous 500-hour construction process, featuring a powerful 400cc parallel twin engine that received a comprehensive top-end rebuild, complete with the installation of new piston rings, valve seals, and gaskets, all utilizing genuine OEM Kawasaki components, except for Viton valve seals.

Equipped with both kickstart and electrical start options, the bike has undergone significant upgrades, including a custom-welded metal tray situated beneath the seat that houses a lithium-ion battery and a cutting-edge regulator/rectifier unit.

The vehicle’s body underwent a transformation, with the previous modifications scrapped in favor of an upswept hoop redesign, while inventory shock mounts were replaced with three-position mounts to enhance versatility and improve adaptability. The tank, entrance fender, and rear section were beautifully finished in a gleaming silver PPG urethane base-coat clear-coat paint job, complemented by an LED tail light system with integrated flip signals. A discreet license plate was cleverly concealed beneath the vehicle’s rear section, secured by a bespoke bracket designed for optimal concealment.

Reducing the inventory gauge cluster by 3 inches and refining its design, we’ve also modified the inventory gasoline tank with meticulously crafted knee pockets, created a seamless high-gloss finish, and integrated an advanced flush-mount pop-up gas cap for enhanced functionality and aesthetics. The bike featured Mikuni VM32 spherical slide carburetors, a custom-welded and wrapped exhaust system equipped with re-packable chrome shorty reverse cone mufflers, as well as an entrance brake rotor precision-drilled with 120 holes and chamfered for enhanced efficiency and reduced weight.

To enhance ergonomics and operational efficiency, manufacturers introduced the option to adjust rear components and reposition rear shocks. The bike’s weight was significantly reduced to just 312 kilograms, its cafe racer profile enhanced by the addition of aluminum upside-down European-style handlebars, a high-performance throttle from Movement, sleek new grips, stylish bar-end mirrors, and intuitive switches.
