BMW has achieved a significant milestone by surpassing one million deliveries of electric vehicles (EVs), with gross sales experiencing a surge during the first quarter of 2024. As electric vehicle (EV) gross sales surged across all major markets, BMW emerged as a clear leader among its peers in the first quarter.

BMW achieves one million electric vehicle gross sales in Q1 2024.

“The BMW Group remains committed to its electrification journey, consistently driving forward battery-electric vehicle (BEV) development.” As we celebrate the delivery of our one-millionth fully electric vehicle since the market introduction of the BMW i3, we mark a crucial milestone in the success of our comprehensive product range, according to Jochen Goller, head of buyer, model, and sales at BMW, who shared his sentiments on Wednesday.

The milestone follows BMW’s launch of the i3 in 2013, marking its debut as a pioneer in the electric vehicle market. In July, Nissan achieved a significant milestone with the production of its seven millionth electric vehicle, marking a decade since the launch of the first LEAF model in 2010.

BMW delivered a record-breaking 82,700 fully electric vehicles across its BMW, MINI, and Rolls-Royce brands during the first quarter of the year? The company’s performance has surged by 28 percent from last year, a significant enough gain to surpass its luxury automotive competitors.

BMW’s electric vehicle segment drove a modest 1.1% rise in overall gross sales to 584,671 units in the first quarter, with a significant contribution from this area of growth.

BMW reports a significant surge in electric vehicle sales, with 78,691 units delivered in the first quarter of this year, representing a remarkable 40.6% increase compared to the same period last year. Notably driving demand were the BMW i4, iX3, iX1, iX, and i7 models.

The all-new iX2 has been receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback since its release last month. Will the BMW i5’s popularity continue to rise?

BMW’s robust Q1 performance enabled it to surpass its key competitors, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen, in terms of development. Mercedes-Benz Group sold approximately 568,400 vehicles during its first quarter, a 6% year-over-year decline.

Mercedes-Benz’s electric vehicle (EV) segment saw a decline of 8 percent year-over-year in the first quarter, with a total of 47,500 all-electric vehicles sold. Group electric vehicle (EV) gross sales plummeted by 9% to 50,500 in the latest year.

Volkswagen Group reported a 3% increase in first-quarter deliveries, with 2.1 million vehicles sold. Notwithstanding the overall decline, Volkswagen’s electric vehicle (EV) gross sales still managed a modest decrease of 3%, totalling 136,400 units year-on-year. Despite a 91% surge in electric vehicle (EV) sales in China, the overall industry still felt the impact of declining demand in Europe (-24%) and the United States (-16%), as other regions struggled to match the robust growth experienced in the Chinese market.

Despite a decline in overall sales, Volkswagen reported that orders from Western Europe “developed positively” during the first quarter of the year. Volkswagen’s electric vehicle order book has surged to over 160,000 units, a staggering 154% increase year-over-year.

The VW ID.4 and ID.5 were its hottest EV models, with a combined 34,600 units sold in Q1; the ID.3 ranked second, with 26,100 deliveries, followed by the Audi e-tron (22,800) and Skoda Enyaq (14,000).

In the United States, Volkswagen Group’s overall automotive sales surged 5% year-over-year, reaching 227,100 vehicles sold, whereas electric vehicle (EV) sales took a 16% dive to 13,200 units. The automotive manufacturer is introducing innovative electric models this year, including the ID.7 Tourer, a long-wheelbase version of the ID.Buzz, and the highly anticipated Porsche Macan Electric.

The all-new BMW Neue Klasse range is set to revolutionize the compact car segment with its innovative electrical SUV and sedan offerings.

BMW anticipates a substantial increase in gross sales growth for 2024, primarily fueled by the proliferation of fully electric vehicles and premium offerings.

Following guidance from BMW’s CFO Walter Mertl, who announced to the press in January that “the tipping point for combustion engines has been reached last year,” the financial leader revealed that the company’s order books are fully booked and poised to continue a significant increase in electric vehicle (EV) sales this year.

BMW has forged a long-term collaboration with Rimac Technology, a pioneering company in electric hypercars, to develop cutting-edge EV battery solutions for its future models. The batteries are expected to be used in BMW’s forthcoming Neue Klasse vehicles.
