2025 Honda Civic Hybrid nears 50 mpg with Civic Si pep

Honda has unveiled further details about its forthcoming Civic hybrid range ahead of its June debut as a sedan, with the hatchback variant set to follow later this summer.

The corporation is poised to position its hybrid Civic variant as both the most environmentally friendly and one of the sportiest, strongest options in the mainstream lineup, rivalling even the traditionally sporty Si model.

The new hybrid model will boast a more powerful 2.0-liter inline-4 engine, exceeding the displacement of its predecessors and the Perception hybrid sedan it is designed to succeed. Honda reveals that its upcoming hybrid model will deliver a substantial 232 pound-feet of torque, making it the most powerful non-Type R Civic iteration to date. Although horsepower ratings weren’t initially announced, it’s worth noting that the Kind R trim was later confirmed to produce 315 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. Honda has also engineered its two-motor hybrid system to simulate gear shifts, allowing for seamless transitions between driving modes.

Honda’s hybrid system, employed in both the CR-V Hybrid and Accord Hybrid, functions as a series hybrid during most acceleration phases, with the gasoline engine serving primarily as an electric generator. Yes, in typical driving scenarios involving steady cruising and light acceleration, the vehicle operates as a parallel hybrid. Regenerative braking can be adjusted to four distinct levels via the steering wheel’s paddle controls.

The primary competitors to the Honda Civic Hybrid are likely the Toyota Corolla Hybrid and Hyundai Elantra Hybrid, two other compact sedans that offer hybrid powertrains.

The Honda Civic Hybrid effectively supplants the Perception, a discontinued model that previously occupied a unique niche in the lineup. Despite this ambition, Honda aims even higher by positioning the hybrid variant firmly under its iconic badge; not surprisingly, the company previously declared that it anticipates Civic hybrid models to comprise a substantial 40% of overall Civic sales.

Honda quietly introduces an all-wheel-drive hybrid system to the Civic. Honda has confirmed that all-wheel-drive (AWD) hybrid vehicles are in development and expected to hit the market by the end of the decade.

Honda aims to enhance the luxury ambiance of the Perception. The Civic hybrids are poised to take a leap forward with an innovative noise management system, standard across all variants, along with hybrid-exclusive tyres and “wheel resonators” that add an extra layer of refinement on Sport Touring trim models.

While Honda has yet to disclose pricing for the 2025 Civic Hybrid, industry insiders predict a slight premium over existing models, potentially in the range of several thousand dollars, drawing parallels with the company’s pricing strategy for its CR-V and Accord hybrid variants. The 2025 Civic Hybrid will be available in LX (sedan only), Sport Hybrid, and Sport Touring Hybrid trim levels, with the Sport featuring a sunroof, heated front seats, and dual-zone climate control.

The Sport Touring trim will also receive premium upgrades, including genuine leather seating, a 12-speaker Bose sound system, and an enlarged 9.0-inch touchscreen display featuring wireless connectivity for both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The all-new Civic Hybrid seamlessly integrates Google’s built-in features throughout its lineup.
